FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

New to health sharing? Here are answers to the questions we hear most.

What is health sharing?

Health sharing is a community-based way to handle medical bills. Members contribute a set amount each month, and those contributions are used to share one another’s eligible medical expenses. Many health sharing communities, including Patriot Share, are built around shared values and faith.

Patriot Share focuses on transparency, clear sharing amounts instead of complicated deductibles, and a supportive community of like-minded members.

Is this health insurance?

No. Patriot Share is not health insurance. Health sharing is not an insurance company, product or policy, and it is not regulated as insurance by state insurance departments. Members are not “insured,” there are no insurance premiums, and the sharing of medical bills is voluntary among members — payment of any particular bill is not guaranteed.

Health sharing memberships do not have to meet the requirements that apply to Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance plans. Please review the program guidelines carefully before joining and consider whether health sharing is the right fit for your situation.

How does sharing work?

In general, the process looks like this:

  1. Pick your plan — choose a membership tier that fits your budget and supports your health journey.
  2. See your doctor — select a provider and show your member ID card when you arrive for care.
  3. Submit a sharing request — the team processes the details and handles the heavy lifting.
  4. The community steps in — eligible costs are shared by the community, and an Explanation of Sharing is sent to you and your provider.

What is an Individual Sharing Amount (ISA)?

Instead of a complicated deductible, members have a clear Individual Sharing Amount: the portion of eligible medical bills you are responsible for before the community begins sharing. It makes your healthcare expenses simpler to understand and budget for.

[TBD: confirm with OneShare: ISA amounts for each plan, whether they apply per person, per family, per incident or per year, and how they reset]

Who can join?

Patriot Share is designed for growing families, young adults, independent contractors and gig workers, and small business owners looking for an affordable, community-driven alternative. Health sharing members generally agree to the community’s shared values and guidelines when they join.

What plan options are there?

Patriot Share offers multiple program tiers designed for different medical needs and budgets — for example, comprehensive Classic options for everyday wellness or Catastrophic plans for unexpected medical costs.

How much does it cost?

Members make a monthly contribution (sometimes called a monthly share amount). Your total cost depends on the plan you choose, the people in your household, and your Individual Sharing Amount when you need care. Smart Virtual Care has a $0 consult fee.

[TBD: confirm with OneShare: monthly contribution amounts by plan and household size, and any enrollment or membership fees]

Are pre-existing conditions shared?

Health sharing programs commonly have special guidelines for pre-existing conditions, such as waiting periods or limits on how much can be shared for a condition that existed before you joined. Because these rules vary, please review them carefully or book a call before you enroll.

Can I choose my own doctors?

Members select a provider and show their member ID card when they arrive for care. Members also get 24/7 Smart Virtual Care with a $0 consult fee for convenient access to healthcare professionals.

[TBD: confirm with OneShare: whether members can see any provider or must use a network, and any rules for hospitals, prescriptions or specialists]
